The Survey Unit exists to serve minority language communities by researching language development needs in Mainland Southeast Asia.

Language survey is directed toward discovering language development needs among minority language communities. This research provides a broad overview of linguistic and sociolinguistic factors. Basic aspects of survey include background research, research design, fieldwork, analysis, and writing up findings to document language development needs.

Sustainable language development necessitates adequate comprehension and positive or neutral attitudes. As such, language survey, often focuses on factors such as language comprehension, language use, language vitality, and language attitudes.
