The Bisu people in Northern Thailand have been working on their own language development for many years and have written some songs for their village-based children education program taught in the mother tongue. This workshop helped them to understand their own music style so that they could create more songs for this program that fit the language and music patterns of their culture. The workshop was held in two Bisu villages near the city of Chiang Rai.
Workshop participants wrote songs based on the weekly cultural themes in their literacy curriculum as well as other songs of their choosing. The training staff coached and helped them as needed throughout the workshop.
Four participants from a Sino-Tibetan language group who are involved with developing their language attended this workshop. They learned the process of beginning a translation, translating for comprehension, re-structuring for naturalness, how to translate metaphors and how to deal with implicit/explicit information. They practiced translating assigned materials and materials of their own choosing from English into their target language, and discussed the aspirations of their people to develop their language and how to use translation as a tool in that effort.
The Yellow Lahu in Thailand have opened two mother tongue-based early childhood care and education programs (MTB-ECCE) in two villages (Khon Muang in Chiang Mai province and Nongpham in Chiang Rai province) and are continuing to develop the curriculum. The focus of this workshop was to assist the Yellow Lahu curriculum development team in developing a primer for teaching Yellow Lahu speakers to read and write their language. This primer will be part of the MTB-ECCE year 2 curriculum. By the end of the workshop, 43 primer lessons were written which covers the entire alphabet.
This workshop was conducted to prepare teachers from several language groups (Yellow Lahu, Prai, Pwo Karen, Lisu, Thai, and K-tang) who are involved with Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programs in northern Thailand to be able to carry out their teaching responsibilities effectively during the school year beginning May 2014. The teachers who attended this workshop had varying degrees of experience teaching young children in a mother-tongue based education program.
During this workshop the participants learned how to use seven materials focused on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the mother tongue, namely primers, Big Books, Small Books, experience stories, picture sequence stories, listening stores and Big Busy pictures. The teachers were also taught the Total Physical Response method for teaching beginning oral language skills in the national language (Thai). At the end of the workshop, the participants gained experience teaching using these various materials, and gained confidence and new skills to use these materials.
Literacy in Northern Thai Lanna Script
To help preserve and promote Lanna script, literacy courses for Lanna script, the traditional script for Northern Thai, were held for Northern Thai speakers. The course was taught using primer lessons and the 2-Track Method for literacy instruction. Students commented that learning Lanna this way was easy and fun. By the end of the 18 hour, 4 week course, they were able to read simple short stories, Aesop fables, and even passages from the Bible. They were also able to write common words and short phrases.
